BLOG DESCRIPTION: CityBlog is the staff blog of Las Vegas CityLife, Nevada's most widely read alternative weekly newspaper. Check it out daily for breaking news, humor, culture, politics, outrage and backtalk.

MY REVIEW: Well...there's nothing wrong with the blog feed, and this blog covers every aspect of Las Vegas...so I've got to give it a YES.

Having said that, I must admit I was turned off by the very first article I saw there: "In the Get High Issue, CityLife assembles a panel of experts to taste-test the latest marijuana alternative," with a photograph featuring four stoned out white guys who as far as I'm concerned should be sent on a long walk off a short pier. I can't stand to see people degrading themselves in that fashion...

The language used is also not to my taste. I believe this is one of those blogs where anyone can post, and it is aimed at the people in their twenties who want to get out and "experience" life, instead of watching it on TV and seeing, without harm, just what drinking and drugging will do to you. But god forbid people should learn from other people's mistakes. No, they must learn from their own.

Of course, there's more than that in this "alternative weekly newpaper" as my sample post shows. There is local news, opinion, arts & entertainment, food reviews... its intended audience will probably love it!

(Note that this is another one of those blogs that is offered twice on the Kindle. I assume the author puts it on Kindle, then a publicity person, not knowing it's already there, offers it again. Both of them are the same price.

What can girls learn from dolls? If the Corner 4 Success Foundation has its way, it’ll be a lot more than how to match a pair of pumps with the right clutch. Tomorrow at 10 a.m., doll designer Stacey McBride-Irby visits the G.I.R.L.S. Club to tout her latest creation, a line of Barbie Dolls with African-American features.

Dolls occupy a special place in the crossfire of the culture war, and Barbie in particular has come in for more than her share of criticism. Although Mattel has manufactured African-American dolls before, this is the first with some ethnically accurate features, not just a darker skin tone. Click here for a slide show of black Barbie dolls.

The club was founded by a former board member for Safe Nest, a shelter for abused women, who saw a chance to positively influence pre-teen girls and prevent the kind of abuse that sent so many of their mothers to the shelter. Club members learn life skills and conflict resolution, among other things, to boost self-esteem and give them the tools for success.

Visits by successful professionals such as McBride-Irby are supposed to provide positive female role models. The visit comes in the middle of a 14-week course, but curious community members are welcome to check it out at 5055 Duneville Street in Las Vegas. For more information, call (888) 803-7661 or visit the foundation’s website.
