Amateur Gourmet (Cooking)

REVIEWED BY: Ann Currie

MY RECOMMENDATION: Yes

AMAZON SUBSCRIPTION LINK: Amateur Gourmet

WEB ADDRESS: www.amateurgourmet.com

BLOG DESCRIPTION: The Amateur Gourmet is a funny food blog filled with recipes, restaurant reviews, food videos and original songs.

MY REVIEW: This is an entertaining cooking blog that runs the gamut from banana pudding (the real thing with 'nilla wafers) to a visit to a local restaurant to see how sushi is made to "Made up Minestrone". All along with very interesting running commentary. The writing is great.

When recipes are given, the ingredients are listed, the instructions are clear with pictures to help.

It is a great mix of true gourmet, down home food, and amusing anecdotes. Adam doesn't talk down to his readers. In the post about sushi, he doesn't assume one knows everything about sushi, nor does he start at the bottom. You feel like you are there at the bar, experiencing the moment - learning all along. He posts frequently (almost every day).

And anyone from New York who takes on Collard Greens knows his stuff when he quotes the Lee Brothers - a reliable source, and Pimento cheese.

In his post for February 22 (Ten Rules for Food Blogging) I loved No. 5 “Update frequently, at least three times a week.”

This guys brilliant and he cooks!!!

Savoring Italy - Italian Food, Wine & Travel Blog

REVIEWED BY: Ms. Cairo

MY RECOMMENDATION: Maybe

AMAZON SUBSCRIPTION LINK: Savoring Italy - Italian Food, Wine & Travel Blog , by Mary Beth Clark

WEB ADDRESS: http://www.marybethclark.com/

BLOG DESCRIPTION: Delicious Italian recipes from our cooking school in Bologna plus Italian chef specialties. Recommendations for Italian food products and wines. Gardening tips and quick recipes for Italian vegetables. For the Italian Traveler: events, guides, webcams, weather, train schedules and Italian newspapers in English. Italian Word of the Day. International Cooking School Of Italian Food And Wine participation cooking courses.

MY REVIEW: Despite the blog's title, all this blog seems to be is strictly Italian food and wine, no travel.

It takes some getting used to. The first page or two of any entry is given over to links to various ingredients. If you follow them to the web, you get more recipes.

After that, you get the actual recipe they are talking about.

I'm not a foodie, and so can't comment on the quality of the recipes given, but they sure do seem to know what they're talking about, and if the blog ranking is any indication, this is a popular blog. So if you like Italian food made the Italian way, check this blog out.

The Foodista Blog (Lifestyle and culture)

REVIEWED BY: Ms. Cairo

MY RECOMMENDATION: YES

AMAZON SUBSCRIPTION LINK: The Foodista Blog

WEB ADDRESS: http://foodista.com. Blog at http://www.foodista.com/blog.

BLOG DESCRIPTION: Food and cooking posts from the staff and editors of Foodista.com.

MY REVIEW: I find the Foodista website a bit confusing. There seem to several parts to it, not well defined. There's a site where chefs and cooks talk about their ouvre, then there's a site that's a user-input site - people can share their own recipes. Then there seem to be two types of blogs. Well, the blog url I shared above is the one that gets fed to the Kindle.

And, if you're a foodie, you'll love this blog! Nuff said.

Here are a few sample paragraphs:
Like many food lovers, the strangest things make me hungry. For instance, the Olympics. Ok, perhaps that’s not too much of a stretch– watching feats of endurance always works up a bit of an appetite– but that’s not what I’m talking about. The Olympics remind me of a wonderful vegetarian restaurant in Vancouver, The Naam; their miso gravy is to-die for, and completely changed what I thought was possible with miso.

Miso is made from fermented grain or soybeans, salt and kojikin, a fungus also used to brew soy sauce and sake. Miso falls into three basic categories: komemiso, made with rice and soybeans; mugimiso, made from barley or rye and soybeans; and mamemiso, made from soybeans alone. Varying the fermentation time, the amount of salt and the strain of kojikin creates further variety: shiromiso (white miso), akamiso (red miso), awasemiso (mixed miso) and hatchomiso, the richest, thickest variety.

Foodiemama (Lifestyles & Culture)

REVIEW BY: Ann Currie

OUR RECOMMENDATION: YES

AMAZON SUBSCRIPTION PAGE: Foodiemama

WEB ADDRESS: http://foodiemama.com/

BLOG DESCRIPTION: Teaches you how to save money, streamline ingredients and save time and stress at dinnertime. Dinner becomes a breeze with Foodiemama.

MY REVIEW: A food blog, that lists easy family friendly recipes. Tips and advice are offered and each recipe is tagged with the "Feeding by Age" to help Moms and Dads) chose meals that will appeal to the kids. Each recipe has a short introduction and comment followed by the ingredients and directions which are clearly given. Entries are only posted every 7 or 8 days and 2 recipes are included in each post.

The recipes are ok, but the posts are infrequent. There is nothing unique or entertaining about the text. If you want a good basic Mom friendly food blog this is one of many.

Freezerburns: Frozen Food Reviews

REVIEWED BY: Ann Currie

MY RECOMMENDATION: NO

AMAZON SUBSCRIPTION PAGE: Freezerburns: Frozen Food Reviews

WEB ADDRESS: www.freezerburns.com/wordpress

BLOG DESCRIPTION: The best in-depth video reviews of your favorite frozen foods. Join Gregory Ng: The Frozen Food Master as he eats his way through the freezer aisle one box at a time.

MY REVIEW: Great idea. We never know what lurks in that box in the frozen food section. After all what are all those ingredients know no one can pronounce. Here comes a blog that can unveil the mysteries. But alas, it is not enough. It falls short. The post are good, well written, even have a video. They contain a list of the nutritional facts of each food reviewed. The problem, he only posts sporadically – 6 times between Sept. 3 and Feb. 11. I will make a note to check back this summer and see it there are more frequent post, but until then I cannot recommend this blog. Sorry, no frozen bananas!

THE GOOD: Great Idea.

THE BAD: Inactive blog.

Candy Snob (hobbies, food - life (chocolate!!!))

REVIEWED BY: Ms. Cairo

MY RECOMMENDATION: ACTIVE AGAIN, as of March 26, 2010

AMAZON SUBSCRIPTION PAGE: Candy Snob

WEB ADDRESS: www.candysnob.com

BLOG DESCRIPTION: A site for the candy obsessed - chocolates, gummies, jelly beans, and anything candy related.

MY REVIEW: In the don’t bother category, Candy Snob. It hasn’t been updated since December 12, 2009. I went to the website (http://candysnob.com) and its archives there go back to January 2008, so it was a well established blog. One hopes that nothing untoward has happened to the person running it. Nevertheless, there’s no point in subscribing to it. (I’ll check back periodically to see if its been revived, so you won’t have to! That’s what The Kindle Blog Report is for!)
