Finding Your Inner Blog Rockstar
Posted on February 28, 2011 by The Magalog Guy
When I speak to groups about content marketing and content repurposing, I recommend making a blog the starting point and hub for your content. A blog is like your very own printing press (without the ink and paper costs).

But I haven’t talked a lot about the art of blogging. So I’m happy to have my Neaderthal Marketing partner-in-crime take the stage today to help you find your inner blog rockstar.

Blogging is not only a powerful promotional tool, but it has also become a popular pastime. Whether you are writing for creativity, personal catharsis or business, it’s important to know what you can do with your blog, and how best to attract readership. Following these four tips will set you on the path to finding your own inner blog rockstar, and attracting a throng of loyal fans.

Don’t Ditch the Niche
Make sure to stick with the niche you’ve chosen to blog about. Downloading an editorial calendar plugin can help you plan and maintain a posting schedule – and it’s easy to drag and drop posts if you want to quickly rearrange them. You may also want to consider posting a list of “Coming Soon” topics to keep your readers engaged, and encourage subscriptions.

For example, if you are posting about underwater basketweaving on Friday, a visible announcement in your sidebar can attract basket-weaving enthusiasts to start following your blog in order to discover your tips and shared resources. For those who are blogging for and about business, keep your posts focused on your central topic.

Regardless of your niche, endeavor to be creative, and find ways to write about your chosen topics with an interesting twist. Keep your blog posts fresh, and maintain a pulse on what’s new within your niche market. The most successful blogs are those that find a way to convey content in a new and interesting way.

Limit Your Wardrobe Changes
Particularly if you’re new to blogging, it can be fun and exciting to swap out your theme in favor of a new one – but this strategy could work against you. Your goal is to be a blog rockstar, but you need to limit your wardrobe changes. In order to build brand awareness, continuity is crucial. If you change your blog look too often, you’ll wind up diluting your brand and confusing your readers.

Instead, focus on branding your blog with a theme that visitors will easily recognize. Repeat the use of colors and fonts in your social networking profiles to reinforce your branding. If you must make a change, preserve as many of the same aspects of the previous theme as you can in order to preserve your brand equity.

Merchandise Your Own Brand
If you are blogging as a revenue generator, you’ve no doubt considered placing ads on your blog. The siren song of problogging has led many a blogger to over-merchandising their blogs with advertisements. This can backfire in two ways – first, it can direct readers away from your blog; and second, it can create so much clutter that it drives your readers away. You can still merchandise and monetize your blog, but do it in more subtle ways.

Things like text links within a blog post are far less obtrusive, and in many cases they have been proven to have a better click-through rate than banner ads. The best road to merchandising your blog is to offer your own products for sale. This not only builds your brand, but enables you to keep all of the profits, rather than receiving a small percentage of a sale as an affiliate.

Keep the Fans Happy
A popular blog is one that is updated on a consistent basis, and one in which the fans voices are heard. Let your readers know how much you value them by keeping in touch and making sure you reply to comments and feedback.

Consider implementing a plugin such as Comment Luv that will reward your readers with a link to their website, and features their most recent post. Fans that feel that they are valued and appreciated will become your most enthusiastic brand evangelists – and you just can’t buy that kind of loyalty.

Blogging can be intensely rewarding – both creatively and financially, but it requires work, patience and a genuine interest in both the content and the audience. If you can convey your personality and point of view in an authentic and interesting way, the fans will follow.

RetroReview: Murderati (mystery books)

REVIEWED BY: Ms. Cairo

MY RECOMMENDATION: YES

AMAZON SUBSCRIPTION LINK: Murderati, published by Murderati.com

WEB ADDRESS: http://murderati.com

BLOG DESCRIPTION: Through the eyes of today's leading mystery and crime writers, MURDERATI examines critical themes, historical archetypes and trends in publishing, marketing and the life of the published author.

MY REVIEW: I enjoyed this blog very much, and recommend it highly. As an aspiring fiction writer, I found this blog extremely interesting, and I think you'll find it so as well. In addition, if you're just a mystery fan, rather than an author, you'll find this of interest just to know how writers think and create.

Some sample paragraphs:
Yesterday, I made the time to attend my local RWA meeting where New York Times bestselling author Alyssa Day spoke about heroines. Alyssa is a talented paranormal romance writer who has a reputation for writing alpha heros AND alpha heroines. I asked her permission to talk about her workshop on this blog because I think it would benefit ALL writers, not simply romance or romantic suspense authors.

Alyssa's workshop was hugely inspirational and beneficial to me. A lot of people might think that after 13 published books why would I want to attend a craft workshop? The same reason why I bought Donald Maass' FIRE IN FICTION last summer--I am still learning. While I believe my strength in writing is centered around my heroines, I also believe that all writers, no matter what their level or how many books under their belt, published or unpublished, can learn something simply by listening to others. Sometimes it's not like we learn something particularly new, but we are given a new way of looking at something we know and it broadens our perceptions and our craft.

Yesterday was just such a day for me.

I write strong heroines. My hardest characters are the heroines who are not in a naturally kick-ass professional. For example, Julia Chandler (prosecutor in SEE NO EVIL) or Robin McKenna (night club owner in KILLING FEAR.) Why? Because when your heroine has a role like cop or FBI Agent or P.I. reader expectations are that the character knows how to take care of themselves, that they are independent and strong-willed. Female cops are not wimps, for the most part, and I don't have to convince my readers that Detective Carina Kincaid (SPEAK NO EVIL) knows how to investigate a murder. I can simply put her in the middle of the investigation and give her the label "detective" and readers get it.

Living Life From A Bed (self help, lifestyle)

REVIEWED BY: Marguerite Zelle

MY RECOMMENDATION: YES

AMAZON SUBSCRIPTION LINK: Living Life From A Bed, by Anon

WEB ADDRESS: http://livinglifefromabed.com/

BLOG DESCRIPTION: I am a woman who has been stuck in one room and a bed since 1996 due to severe chronic illnesses: Autonomic Dysfunction/Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome type 3. Coeliac Disease. Raynauds. Sjogren’s Syndrome. Plus various other things!

Despite suffering severely I have managed to achieve a great deal and yes, you can live life from a bed!

This is my ramblings on everything in my life from illness to love and success all from my bed and no it's not all doom and gloom!

Posts are made at least once a week illness permitting, I try to do two or three a week wherever possible

MY REVIEW: I have a nephew whose been a great disappointment to me. At age 13 he has no goals, no ambitions, except to spend as much time as possible playing violent video games on his PS2. It's disappointing, and annoying, as it is every time I see young people slouching down the street - with all the health in the world, the intelligence to be capable of learning anything if they'd just put their minds to it, and instead of making goals and accomplishing something they take drugs or get drunk every night and whine about how hard their lives are. Just makes me want to kick them.

Contrast that to the author of this blog, who has been bedridden for over ten years due to various chronic illnesses, who could so easily give up on life and spend all her time watching TV, and instead has goals that she is going to achieve, come hell or high water.

Quite inspirational.

Check it out.

Busy, busy, busy!
Posted on February 16, 2011 by Livinglifefromabed
Following on from my last past, yes I did manage a quick bath and I didn’t suffer after either, hooray! Just in case anyone has been waiting anxiously for 3 days to find out lol

Yesterday was a really busy day for me. I had my Occupational therapy assessment, some suggestions were recommended to help me out in day to day life but it was mostly to assess my accommodation needs for a housing register claim. Finger’s crossed I end up on the priority list for a more permanent home. The assessment took an hour and a half and she had only just gone when the opticians turned up. His assistant had before they arrived ticked the box on a form to say I was over 60, not quite there yet dear, come back in just under 30yrs! lol I’ll let them off though, seeing as all their other patients they visited yesterday were in their 80′s and 90′s! My prescription has got a bit stronger and I ordered some new glasses online as soon as they went. So much cheaper. When I mentioned I buy them online the opticians assistant said, ‘how do you know they’re cheaper than ours?’ Er… well, at £25 (approx $35) a pair for rimless, anti-reflection and thin lenses I can guarantee they are cheaper than yours when you quoted me £120 for one pair and that was 7yrs ago! lol It does make me feel a tiny bit guilty, I wouldn’t want to see high-street opticians being shut down left right and centre but for those on low incomes, I can’t justify paying that much just for one pair. I need a spare pair as well! I could eat for weeks on that amount of money.

Anyway, I was expecting to suffer badly today after the mental effort of yesterday and the hustle and bustle of everything going on but as always with these illnesses you never can tell and… I feel fine! Well, apart from a headache because my neck muscles are cramped up (that’s been going on for days) and my usual low energy, tiredness stuff, I don’t feel any worse for it at the moment! Who knows, I may even manage a few minutes of exercise with my kinect later. I also really need to do some studying!

Retro Review: Familes & Technology (Lifestyle & Culture)

REVIEWED BY: Ann Currie

MY RECOMMENDATION: The blog had no posts from December until March, but now the author seems to have picked it up again.

AMAZON SUBSCRIPTION LINK: Families and Technology

WEB ADDRESS: http://www.softwaretime.com/wp/

BLOG DESCRIPTION: Have you ever screamed "Enough!" after becoming overwhelmed with information overload or the constant buzzing of devices? Are you a parent who is tired of trying to pry the kids off of their screens to go play outside for a rare change? Or have you found that all of the connectivity that we have improves your family's life, whether it be video conferencing the grandparents in or helping run the family smoothly.

We like to explore the trends in where technology, as it affects people of all ages and especially from the family angle. How do you manage technology? How do you use it to do things that pull your family together, or open avenues for doing things that can't be done without technology?

MY REVIEW: This is a good topic, however the most recent post was December 9, 2009 and the one prior to that November 15, 2009. Not only is it an inactive blog – it was never updated frequently. Possibly a good topic but we'll never really know from this author.
